What is VeriSign Identity Protection?
Combining Two-Factor Authentication, Fraud Detection, and a Shared Validation Network
Standard authentication techniques, like a basic username and password, are proving to be insufficient protection for higher-risk online consumer interactions. However, many strong authentication solutions available today are expensive to implement and maintain, or difficult for a consumer to use.
VeriSign® Identity Protection (VIP) offers a comprehensive and consumer-friendly suite of identity protection services, including two-factor authentication and intelligent fraud detection.
Many of your customers already recognize VeriSign as a leader in Internet security and trust the VeriSign Secured® Seal. Now, you can leverage our reputation and offer a more secure experience to your customers with minimal disruption to their normal online experiences. And because VIP is delivered across a shared network validation infrastructure, your business can deploy two-factor authentication without being solely responsible for the costs of development, customer support, and system maintenance.

VIP Fraud Detection Service
VIP Fraud Detection Service works behind the scenes except when an anomaly is detected. A rules engine and a self-learning behavior engine process each event to determine risk based on pre-determined parameters, including location, device, time, network address, transaction type, and user information. If the risk threshold is exceeded, the system automatically requires a higher level of authentication. When second-factor authentication is required, legitimate customers will appreciate the added level of protection and account hijackers will be denied access.

VIP Network
The VIP Shared Authentication Network leverages a common validation infrastructure for participating VIP authentication customers and a single VIP credential for all network member Web sites. Consumers who regularly log in to multiple Web sites will have the added protection of second-factor authentication with the convenience of one credential when they transact with VIP Network members. The VIP Fraud Intelligence Network helps provide early warning of attacks and comprehensive watchlists to block potential fraud sources.

What is OATH?
The Initiative for Open Authentication, or OATH, is collaboration within the online security industry to establish an open reference architecture using open standards. The goal is to create universal adoption of strong authentication, such as two-factor authentication, that is compatible for any user, on any device, over any network.
OATH-compliant authentication solutions, like VeriSign Identity Protection, offer more credential options at an overall lower cost of ownership. And by choosing an OATH-compliant solution, your business benefits from reduced costs, new technologies reaching market faster, no vendor lock or worry of a proprietary system becoming obsolete, and more overall flexibility.
More information on OATH is available at http://www.openauthentication.org.
